Melbourne is home to many museums and galleries, however visiting every single one can get a bit pricey.
If you’re ever in Melbourne, one of my favorite galleries was showcased all around Melbourne, and it was FREE!
In the U.S. it’s called graffiti, in Melbourne it’s street art.
Graffiti is basically writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illegally on a wall or other surface in a public place. But here in Melbourne, I feel like it’s welcomed as an art. You will never see graffiti on any of the buildings here in Melbourne; alley ways are basically reserved to be canvases where artists in broad daylight paint what comes to mind.
The graffiti is different than what I see at home, it’s not gang names and roman numerals to claim territory. They’re actual works of art with messages and meaning, just a different medium really.
It’s was so exciting to walk around the town and find an alley way lit up with color because of the murals and messages.
If you’re ever in Melbourne, street art is definitely something to admire and appreciate during your stay.
